Lower risk of death for those who drink a lot of black tea

by

Tea is one of the most widely consumed beverages worldwide.

Drinking black tea is linked to a reduced risk of premature death, a new US scientific study shows. The risk reduction is greatest for those who drink two or more black teas a day.

The researchers, led by Dr. Maki Inoue-Choi of the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics at the US National Cancer Institute, who made the relevant publication in the US medical journal “Annals of Internal Medicine”, analyzed data on about half a million people between the ages of 40 and 69 years old, of whom 85% drank tea regularly and, of those, 89% black tea.

Compared to those who drank no tea at all, those who drank at least two cups of black tea daily had a 9% to 13% lower risk of death. The reduction in risk was true regardless of whether someone drank coffee at the same time, added sugar or milk to their tea, drank it hot or cold, etc.

Tea is one of the most widely consumed beverages worldwide. Previous studies have linked green tea to lower premature mortality, but the new research shows that black tea also provides a benefit.
