No more yachts and watches: How abs became the new status symbol for CEOs

by

Bezos has been wearing tighter and tighter shirts lately, Endeavor’s Emanuel wowed in Mykonos this summer, and Telegram’s CEO has been posing topless by the pool.

In the not-too-distant past, the status symbol of a big business CEO was probably his boat or private jet. Men were judged mainly by their shoes and watches, the general view being that a man could be ugly as long as he was rich. Not anymore.

Just take a look at his Instagram Jeff Bezos to understand that things have changed. As the “bible” of business, the Wall Street Journal, observes, the new status symbol among CEOs it’s the abs.

THE Jeff Bezos he seems to be wearing tighter and tighter shirts lately, accentuating his bulging muscles. THE Ari Emanuel, CEO of entertainment giant Endeavor, he impressed with his abs when he was photographed on a boat this summer in Mykonos, alongside Elon Musk. THE Strauss Zelnick, gaming executive poses in a clingy purple t-shirt on his Instagram, and the CEO of Telegram, Pavel Durov uploaded a picture of him posing half-naked by a pool with the caption: “Should I start posting more pictures on here?”.

According to the Wall Street Journal, there’s an explanation why these middle-aged men suddenly look like models in protein powder commercials. Most likely in the two years of telecommuting and confinement they channeled their energy into exercise. Perhaps it helps where they’re at in life (Bezos, 58, separated from his wife of many years and is now photographed everywhere by the paparazzi with his new partner, while Emanuel, 61, just remarried, this time to a fashion designer ) or the competition between them.

“Whatever the reason, abs have become a status symbol in the business world for 2022,” writes the Wall Street Journal, pushing middle-aged men to seek perfection, just as women have for years.

CEOs now pride themselves not on the endless hours they spend at their desks, but on how often they exercise, says entrepreneur Mark Cuban. “I think the pandemic and telecommuting created an opportunity for senior executives to focus on fitness,” he explains. As he says, Emanuel managed to steal all the attention from the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, on their recent vacation in Greece because he was so fit.

After all, Musk himself publicly acknowledged, when the photos went around the world via social media, that he should take his shirt off more often to get a tan. And after a few weeks, she revealed that she had lost 9kg through the intermittent diet. “I need to work out and get in better shape,” he recently said on a podcast.
