Asked on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast why he hasn’t moved into the superhero realm, Tom Hanks said that ‘as far as he knows’ he was never asked.
“It’s like a sacred cow,” he said during the conversation, and when host Josh Horowitz said that Marvel and Hanks seem like a good fit, the actor said he wanted to “elaborate on that a little bit.”
“Is there a period in cinema where a very specific genre of film dominated the market?” he wondered. “You could say the western films in the 50s, okay… Let’s take John Ford’s westerns. We can say that this is John Ford’s Western Universe. It’s not that different, perhaps, from the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” he said.
“When you look at the era of westerns in the 1950s, a lot of them weren’t great,” he said, adding, however, “you don’t want to criticize any movie because movies are very difficult to make.”
Tom Hanks estimated that the biggest question is how many screens will be left. “I think there are a lot of movies that don’t need to be shown on movie screens,” he said.
The actor explained that he hasn’t seen all of the Marvel movies, but the ones he has have made him think. “There are some great performers there and these people really gave it their all,” he said.
“I could say that they are all very good. They’re all pretty good,” added Tom Hanks.
