The name of the iconic French director is often associated with the nouvelle vague, perhaps the most important movement in the history of cinema, as he was one of its pioneers.
Godard was one of the world’s most celebrated directors, known for classics like Breathless and Contempt, which shook up the film establishment and inspired iconoclastic directors decades after his career peaked in the 1960s.
In total he directed over 100 films.
Jean-Luc Godard was awarded the Special Palme d’Or at the 71st Cannes Film Festival in 2018 for his film Le Livre d’Image (The Book of the Image).
In 2010 he was awarded an Honorary Oscar, but did not attend the awards ceremony, while in 2015 he won for the first time in his career an award at the Cannes International Film Festival.
