The Greek secret society that paved the way for the Greek War of Independence of 1821
The most likely date of its establishment Friendly Society the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Twitter.
“September 14, 1814, marks the most likely date of the foundation, in Odessa, of the Philiki Etairia, the most important Greek secret society that paved the way for the Greek War of Independence of 1821″says the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a post on Twitter.
The Filiki Etairia was the most important of the secret organizations formed in preparation for the Revolution of 1821, for the liberation of the Greeks from the Ottoman Empire. It was founded according to the oldest historians, by Emmanuel Xanthos, Nikolaos Skoufas and Athanasios Tsakalosf. Its fourth member, Antonios Komizopoulos from Philippoupolis, was initiated. The third or fifth member of the Company may have been Nikolaos Galatis. Also among the first members to be initiated was Panagiotis Anagnostopoulos (and in fact according to some sources he was a co-founder, before Xanthos who was initiated later). The Asia Minor Kyriaki Sailor from Smyrna was the first female member. The Friends, after being initiated into the Society, took an oath of allegiance and communicated with codes, nicknames and watchwords. This secrecy partly explains the scant and unclear evidence we have today about this organization.
