National Opera: The program for the first seven months of 2022

Important conductors, top directors, emblematic choreographers and distinguished protagonists of international scope stand out in the new program of the National Opera (ELS) for the second half of the artistic season 2021/22. The program was announced today (8/12) with the wish and desire of the organization to “leave behind us the darkness, the clouds, the gloomy figures and the silent mouths and to open the eyes to the new year with bright sun, big smiles and open arms “.

“With small but steady steps, the National Opera returns to full artistic development and proposes the optimism and joy of art, with the aim of leaving behind the difficult days of confinement, loneliness, fear,” says the artistic director of ELS, George Koumentakis.

From January to July 2022, the National Opera will present at the “Stavros Niarchos” Hall and at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus five of the most important operas of the world repertoire, by Uberto Giordano, Charles Gounod, Joo Jou a new opera by Angelos Triantaphyllos dedicated to the elderly, a triptych of contemporary dance choreographed by Konstantinos Rigos, Girzi Killian, Ohad Naharin, an oratorio assignment of ELS to Turkish artists, an installation with the new film by Giorgos Lanthos of the Struggle “by Mikis Theodorakis, in the context of the three-year cycle” Mikis Theodorakis “.

In particular, George Lanthimos presents his new long-awaited short film entitled “Rain” and stars the Oscar-winning Emma Stone and the distinguished French actor Damian Bonar, as part of the program of ELS and NEON “The Artist on the Composer” . “Vlichi” was filmed in February 2020 in Tinos. George Lanthimos, in addition to directing, also signs the script and production of the film. The musical script consists of works by GS Bach / Knut Nysted and Tosio Osokawa, which will be performed live in the Stavros Niarchos Hall by ensembles during the screenings of the film.

Robert Wilson signs an evocative “Othello” in the big co-production of ELS with the Baden-Baden Festival. The avant-garde director who changed the direction of the opera gives the first word to the music and proposes for “Othello” a minimalist stage world, with artistic sets, impressive lighting, stylized kinesiology, special costumes and intense make-up. The production that received a warm welcome in April 2019 in Baden-Baden is coming to Athens with an international cast headed by the most sought after “Othello” of our time Alexander Antonenko.

Also, the director of the Athens Festival, Katerina Evangelatou, creates a new ambitious “Rigoletto” for the Herodion stage. Nikos Petropoulos, Renato Tzanella, Hugo de ‘Ana sign the revivals of “Andrea Senier”, “Faust” and “Tosca”, respectively. While the great Nikos Karathanos signs the direction of the new opera “Mesa Chora”.

The internationally recognized protagonists with important journeys in the biggest lyric theaters of the planet Marcelo Alvarez, Marcelo Puente, Eva-Maria Westbrook, Alexandr Antonenko, Ivan Magri, Irina Lungou, Christine Opolez, Ramon important with Ramo of ELS with international recognition, such as, among others, Dimitris Platanias, Tselia Kostea, Tassi Christogiannopoulos, Dionysis Sourbis, Dimitris Paksoglou, Vasiliki Karagianni, Giannis Christopoulos, Giannis Giannisis, Tassiris Mastoglios, Petos Tassitolos, Christos Apostolos Ellen Nezi et al.

The productions are directed by Filip Ogen, Loukas Karytinos, Elias Voudouris, Pierre Dimousso, Nikos Vassiliou, Stathis Soulis, Miltos Logiadis. In addition, the dancers of the ELS Ballet will perform choreographies by the leaders of modern dance, Girzi Killian and Ohad Naharin.

Referring to the new program announced by ELS, its artistic director, George Koumentakis notes:

“Despite the fact that the pressure of the pandemic is still here, the National Opera continues in the second half of the 2021/22 season to present in the Stavros Niarchos Hall and the Herodion a complete artistic program, with important world premieres – such as the long-awaited film by George Lanthimos, in co-production with NEON, and the opera “Mesa Chora” by ‘Angelos Triantafyllou-, but also co-productions, such as the one with the Baden-Baden Festival, Verdi’s “Othello” directed by Bob Wilson.

At the same time, after a small postponement due to the pandemic, next March comes the important assignment of ELS to the Turkish composer Kamran Ince, for the oratorio “Jus soli”, in the context of the 200th anniversary of 1821. This is a work that will try to turn the sea that separates and unites the two peoples into a symbol of peace and understanding.

“Andrea Senier”, who was also to be presented in 2021, is coming in January 2022 to the Stavros Niarchos Hall, where he will go up in April and another revival from 2012, Gunos’ “Faust”. At the Herodeion, in the summer we will see the new production of “Rigoletto” with the signature of Katerina Evangelatou, as well as the revival of “Tosca”. Theodorakis three-year cycle continues in March with the “Songs of the Struggle”, while in January in collaboration with the Union of Greek Composers we will present the concert of the award-winning works of the 1821 lyric song competition, “Greek Revolution and melodic poetry”.

Finally, our Ballet will present a triptych of contemporary dance, where the new choreography of the director Konstantinos Rigos will converse with choreographies that signify great figures of modern dance, such as Girzi Killian and Ohad Naharin “.

The January-July 2022 program is implemented with the support of the donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (ISN) for the strengthening of the artistic extroversion of the National Opera, as well as for the creation of the anniversary program for the 200 years since the Revolution of 1821.
