What surprises does the 5th season of the dramatized series about the British royal family bring

Netflix has revealed the premiere date for the The Crown Season 5 during Tudum’s online fan event on Saturday. The drama series about the British royal family is set to return on November 9 with an all-new cast.

Although the writers and producers, including creator Peter Morgan, have remained tight-lipped about what real-life events of the royals they intend to bring to the screen, the casting has given fans some clues to dissect.

Salim Daw was cast to play the billionaire department store owner Mohamed Al-Fayed, while Amir El-Masry as a younger Al-Fayed, suggesting that audiences will be privy to some flashback scenes. Additionally, Khalid Abdalla will play the son of Al-Fayed Dodi, who tragically died in the same Paris car crash in 1997 that killed Princess Diana and the two are known to have been romantically involved at the time.

Humayun Saeed is set to join the ensemble cast as Dr. Hasnat Khan, a British-Pakistani heart surgeon with whom Diana had a secret two-year affair.

Audiences will also get a glimpse of a young Prince William and Prince Harry, with Dominic West’s son Senan playing William and Teddy Hawley and Will Powell portraying Harry at different ages.

Although casting suggests that Season 5 will cover the period up to and including her death Diana, “The Crown” has always made innovative choices when it comes to the scenes it actually plays. In Season 4, the camera follows Emma Corrin (who plays an 18-year-old Diana) and Josh O’Connor (Prince Charles) as they prepare for their wedding, giving the audience a glimpse of the couple in their prime, but not following them through steps of the church.

The 1990s were a turbulent time for the royals. The Queen famously called 1992 an “annus horribilis” after her only daughter, Princess Anne, divorced and her sons, Prince Charles and Prince Andrew, both separated from their wives after a series of affairs. In the same year, Windsor Castle also suffered a devastating fire.

Although already hugely popular with viewers alike, the death of Queen Elizabeth II has sparked interest in the series. According to data analytics company Whip Media, the show’s UK viewing figures increased by more than 800% following the Queen’s death, compared to the previous Friday-Sunday period.
