The Theater on Cyclades – Lefteris Vogiatzis Street, one of the most important and influential theaters of the Athenian scene, is entering its new era. Building bridges with the great history of its founder and with the gaze simultaneously facing forward, the cultural organization ‘Twilight’ of George Lykiardopoulos takes over for the next 10 years the historic theater of Kypseli.
The doors open on November 3 with the groundbreaking work of the Russian playwright “Misfortune from the very mind” by Alexander Gribogedov, directed by Stathis Livathinos, with a new 13-member group of young and old actors and a new translation by Elsa. This fundamental text was first uploaded by Lefteris Vogiatzis in 1986 and has never been presented in Greece since.
Stathis Livathinos’s new modern approach to this classic Russian comedy attempts to highlight his -almost scandalous- analogies with our “today” and converses with the sharp anatomy of the early 19th century Russian made by Gribogotov using of classic European comedy under which relentless criticism and bitter awareness constantly emerge.
The frustrated return and cannibalistic downfall of the intelligent multi-talented who refuses to fully adapt to a society that deifies mediocrity, the frontal confrontation of a sincere ideological stance with the perpetual adaptation that ensures success, the absence of promising political action an absolute need for change while the new is not yet apparent, the confrontation of a culture of virtual lightness with the real needs of survival, the time that alters everything leading to the inevitable end, the love betrayal that cancels life relationships by replacing them with meaningless conventional ones, are just a few from the issues identified, both in our chaotic present and in the society targeted by Gribogenov’s sharp satirical look.
The play marks the return of Stathis Livathinos to the free theater, as this is his first direction after his tenure as Artistic Director of the National Theater.
