A new movie appeared on Netflix a few days ago and reminded everyone of the good action thrillers of previous decades. Outlaws had previously premiered at the San Sebastian’s Las Leyes de la Frontera (Border Laws) festival. Today, however, it is on the platform with its English title and a story worth seeing tonight.
In Outlaws it is placed in the Girona of 1978
A few years after Franco’s death, Spain is still trying to find its balance. In the city of Girona we meet 16-year-old Nacho, who experiences extreme bullying by his peers and older. He tries to find some peace in the places he loves the most and there he meets Tere and El Zarco. This acquaintance seems to be decisive for all the other years of his life. Nacho soon learns that his two new friends are the leaders of a gang that commits petty crimes.
After some hesitation, Nacho enters the game. It is not so much crime and robbery that draw him to it. On the contrary, it is the respect he receives from people like Tere and El Zarco. They treat him as an equal and this is something that Nacho has never experienced around him. At the same time, however, his attraction to Tere plays an important role, which seems to be completely mutual from the beginning.
Through the adventures of the Outlaws, Nacho finds himself
For the first time he is in an environment where he is accepted as he is. Especially Tere, with her self-confidence and courage, is an example for him. At the same time, Nacho is proving very good at petty crime. So the rest of the team starts setting bigger goals. Everything goes smoothly until two police officers notice them and so a discreet hunt begins between the “good” and the “bad” of the case.
Ultimately, Outlaws turns out to be more of a coming-of-age movie than something like Money Heist. All the characters seem to carry their wounds from the dark days of Spain and everyone manages them as best they can.
