The book is due to go on public display at Chawton House early next year
A signed copy of a novel by Jane Austen, one of the most popular novelists in English literature according to the Guardian, was bought for £375,000 (€430,000).
It is the only first edition of ‘Emma’ – bearing the handwritten note ‘from the author’ – and managed to fetch the highest sale price of any of the novelist’s printed works.
It was placed at Chawton House, Hampshire, formerly owned by Austen’s brother Edward, now a Research Institute specializing in women writers, after its American buyer insisted the book remain in the UK.
London rare book dealer Peter Harrington said this is the only signed presentation copy of the novel. She had given it to her friend Anne Sharp, who was governess to Edward’s children. “Jane took Anne’s response to her novels seriously, asking her to be completely honest in her evaluation, and noting her comments in the diary.”
The book is due to go on public display at Chawton House early next year.
