“When I look at Mick and Keith, I don’t see any reason why they can’t continue to perform in their 80s,” says the legendary bassist
Since 1993, Darryl Jones has been playing bass in the Rolling Sons. “I did what I dreamed of doing,” he says, in Rolling Stone magazine’s “Unknown Legends” series of interviews.
He’s been playing bass in the band for nearly as many years as the band’s original bassist, Bill Wyman, but that doesn’t mean he’s a full Stones member. “I’m not in the Rolling Sons,” he says. “‘Playing with the Rolling Stones’ is how I choose to describe it.”
“They came on my radar when I was dating a woman in Italy. She used to do somersaults with this Steel Wheels record, playing it constantly when I visited her. He was like “He’s so great! He’s so great!” I was like “It’s OK”. But as I was listening to him, I was like, “You know, the way I play, I could work with them.” And that was long before Bill Wyman left the band. It was 1989.”
Recordings, concerts, tours followed. “When I look at Mick and Keith, I see no reason why they can’t continue to perform in their 80s. That’s what blues guys do. They play until it’s not possible for them to play,” he says. And he emphasizes that he would love to be by their side until the end.
