His painting David Hockney (David Hockney) with the magnificent sunrise over the Mediterranean was sold in six minutes at a Christie’s auction for 24 million euros, almost three times more than its estimate.

The painting “Early Morning, Sainte-Maxime”, completed by the British artist in 1969, was privately owned for more than 30 years. The painter was inspired by a photograph he took while staying at the home of director Tony Richardson with his then-partner Peter Schlesinger. The port of Sainte-Maxime is on the French Riviera, near Saint Tropez, where the director’s house was also located.

“Schlesinger was Hockney’s great love and what you see in the painting is a sense of real satisfaction and happiness. You can feel the joy he felt painting,” said Katharine Arnold, head of Christie’s.

This particular painting is not Hockney’s “most expensive” work, according to the Guardian. ‘Portrait of an Artist’ sold for €81 million in 2018, making David Hockney the highest paid living artist.
