Robbie Coltrane, who played the character of Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter saga on screen, died this Friday (14) at the age of 72. According to the website Deadline, the actor’s agent was the one who confirmed the death in a hospital in the city of Larbert, Scotland. Also according to the publication, Coltrane battled with health problems for two years, but the cause of death was not revealed.
As soon as the news broke, Coltrane’s friends and co-stars mourned the Scotsman’s death. Harry Potter author JK Rowling was one of the first. “I will never meet anyone remotely like Robbie again. He was an amazing, complete talent, and I was lucky enough to meet him, work with him, and laugh with him. I send my love and deepest condolences to his family, especially your children,” she wrote on Twitter.
Who also paid tribute to the actor was Afshan Azad-Kazi. The actress who played the character Padma Patil in the Harry Potter films said she was “destroyed” and thanked her partner for his generosity on sets. “Absolutely destroyed. Our eternal Hagrid. What an honor to meet you and be in the same place as this legend. Rest in peace.”
James Phelps, who played Fred Weasley in one of the most successful movie sagas, wrote, “We’re going to miss the random conversations about every topic in the world. And I’ll never forget that in September 2000, Robbie Coltrane arrived for me, 14 years old, very nervous, on my first day on set, and said, ‘Enjoy it, you’re going to be great.’ Thank you for that,” he commented on social media.
