Barbie… “otherwise” – Painter Mark Ryden creates a series of the famous doll

by

According to the pop painter, Barbie is a cultural phenomenon, an archetypal figure

For almost three decades, the Barbie appears in Mark Ryden’s works, but this time the pop painter is collaborating with the toy company Mattel and creating a series of limited editions of the famous doll. These creations, along with his other works, will be exhibited at the Kasmin Gallery in Los Angeles from November 11 to December 12 and the exhibition is entitled “Pink Pop”.

Speaking to Ocula Magazine, Ryden said these projects will depict his “own new Barbie personas.” Foreshadowing the idea, he released one of his new ‘Pink Pop’ paintings; it’s called ‘Pink Pop Barbie’ and it’s from 2021: a candy-coloured scene featuring Barbara Millicent Roberts in a strappy dress and purse which looks like a t-bone steak. Present in the line-up are clowns as well as insects and dogs dressed as ‘bunnies’; even Abraham Lincoln playing guitar with a ukulele.

“It’s hard to define Barbie,” Ryden said. “He is a cultural phenomenon, an archetypal figure. She is a true celebrity, a subject worthy of Andy Warhol depicting alongside his depictions of Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe.”
