Louis Faurer: Exhibition of the “Melancholic Observer” in Paris

by

Until October 29, Les Douches la Galerie in Paris is hosting the exhibition “Louis Faurer, Le Guetteur Mélancolique (The Melancholy Observer)”, presenting around 20 photographs of the American photographer, giving an opportunity to appreciate his talent.

Louis Faurer was born in 1916 in Philadelphia and his settlement in New York in 1947 was decisive. “The years from 1946 to 1951 were important. I photographed almost every day and the hypnotic light of the evening led me to Times Square” he had said. Fascinated by the Big Apple, Faurer presented a ghostly view of the city, playing with shadows and reflections.

The street was his favorite part, but unlike his European contemporaries he was not looking for anecdotes or colorful pictures. And while at the core of his work is the human, his lens captures crowds passing through the streets, the smiles of a group of friends in a coupe on Broadway, shadowy figures placing the letters on a movie billboard.
