Soap operas, which for over a year were restricted to reruns because of the Covid-19 pandemic, made a strong comeback in this year of 2021. With that, the best soap category returned to the F5 Award, consecrating “Amor de Mãe” (Globo ) as the big highlight.

The production, written by Manuela Dias and directed by José Luiz Vilamarim, received 35% of the 28,372 votes from internet users. Also competing for public preference were “Genesis” (21%), “Secret Truths 2” (16%), “Save Yourself” (15%) and “In the Times of the Emperor” (13%).

“Amor de Mãe” premiered in November 2019 and was eventually interrupted because of the pandemic in March 2020. Its return took place in March of this year, with 23 chapters dedicated to giving a conclusion to the trio of protagonists, formed by Thelma (Adriana Esteves) , Lourdes (Regina Casé) and Vitória (Taís Araujo).

Due to sanitary protocols on set, the author chose to include Covid-19 in the plot. In the end, the second half of the telenovela reached an average of 32 rating points in Greater SP (each point of Kantar Ibope is equivalent to 76 thousand homes), surpassing the pre-pandemic patina, when it cost to reach 30 points.

In addition to being elected the best soap of the year, “Amor de Mãe” also competed in other categories of the F5 Award this year. In the category best soap opera actress, the production had three representatives: Regina Casé, Jessica Ellen and Adriana Esteves, the latter being the winner, with 48% of the 41,534 votes.

Regina Casé was in the vice-leadership, winning 29% of the votes of internet users, followed by Jessica Ellen (8%). They also competed for the Day Mesquita award (8%), for her performance in “Genesis” (Record), and Mariana Ximenes (also 8%), for her role in “Nos Tempos do Imperador” (Globo).

In the category best soap opera actor, the highlight was Selton Melo, who gives life to Dom Pedro 2º in “Nos Tempos do Imperador” (Globo). He received 40% of the votes, which reached 39,883, and surpassed Chay Suede (20%) for “Mother’s Love”; Rainer Cadete (15%), from “Secret Truths 2” (Globoplay); Zécarlos Machado (12%), from Genesis; and Michel Gomes (12%), also from “Nos Tempos do Imperador”.

In 2020, the categories best telenovela, best telenovela actress and best telenovela actor were not part of the F5 Award, due to the suspension of productions. At the time, the category was replaced by the best rerun of the pandemic and consecrated “Totalmente Demais” (Globo, 2015-2016).
