Golden Globes: Belfast and The Power of the Dog at the Top of the Nominations (Trailer)

Jane Cambion’s dramatic films “The Power of the Dog” and Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast” dominated the Golden Globe nominations Monday, plunged into a period of turmoil and uncertainty, following a wave of criticism and boycott after lack of and transparency.

The Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association (HFPA), which makes up the jury for these awards, has been under pressure for months after allegations of racism, sexism, harassment and corruption.

Traditionally, the Golden Globe Awards ceremony attracted all the international stars of the big screen. But this year, the protagonists are expected to keep their distance from a night that NBC refused to broadcast.

It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.

“It will not be the same event as we were used to, but we have said that we will go ahead with the nominations and award the prizes no matter what,” HFPA President Helen Henne told AFP. nominations in Beverly Hills early this morning, local time, by a surprise guest, rapper Snoop Dogg.

“The awarding of our prizes has a long history and we just want to continue, as we always did,” she explained.

“Belfast” and “The Power of the Dog” lead the list of nominees with seven nominations each for the 79th Golden Globes ceremony.

“Coda: At the Rhythm of the Heart”, “Dune” and “The Williams Method” also claim the award for Best Drama.

From the TV side, the series “Succession” is considered the favorite in the ceremony of January 9, with five nominations.

The Golden Globes traditionally open the season of the Hollywood Film Awards and are regarded as almost as prestigious as the Oscars in the entertainment industry. But their future now seems uncertain.

More than 100 public relations officials wrote to the HFPA last March calling for an end to “discriminatory and unprofessional behavior, immorality and allegations of corruption.”

In the face of the scandal, the organization soon announced a series of reforms, in particular the unprecedented accession of new members to improve the representation of minority groups within it.

“We are already doing well in our reforms. We have worked hard and we are proud of these reforms, but the work is not done (…). “We still need some time and we hope the studios and the industry will continue to support us,” said the HFPA president.

So far, however, the Union’s reforms have provoked more skepticism than praise.

Critics such as actresses Scarlett Johansson and Mark Raffaello have publicly denounced the reforms as inadequate, and Tom Cruise has sent back to the Union the three Golden Globes awarded to him in a protest.

Major studios such as Warner Bros., Netflix and Amazon have announced that they will no longer work with HFPA until major changes are made.

In the past, the Golden Globes were often accused of ignoring non-white actors and directors, who, however, had signed memorable performances and plays.

This year, three of the nominees for Best Actor in a Drama Film are black: Will Smith, Denzel Washington and Machersala Ali.

Rarely honored with Golden Globes, female directors are represented in the 2022 nominations by Jane Campion and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

The Golden Globe nominations, which are generally featured in the morning magazines of major US networks, which are very popular and widely watched, this year were forced to be limited to their YouTube channel, as there was a great deal of indifference.

“Hollywood’s reaction was a collective silence,” the Los Angeles Times wrote this morning.
