The Dominican archaeological mission of the University of San Domingo in Egypt, led by Dr. Kathleen Martinez, succeeded in uncovering a rock-cut tunnel about 13 meters below ground during the mission’s archaeological excavations in the area of the Temple of Tapozeris Magna, west of Alexandria.
Dr. Mustafa Vaziri, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Archeology, said, stating that the tunnel is about 1,305 meters long and about 2 meters high, two heads were also found near the temple, one of them belonging to a person from the heroic era, and the other is probably a statue of the Spook Father.
Preliminary studies show that the architectural design of the discovered tunnel is very similar to that of Greece’s Jubilee Tunnel, but longer, characterizing it as a geometric marvel.
He added that during the excavations and archaeological investigation of the tunnel, part of the tunnel was discovered submerged under the water of the Mediterranean Sea. A number of ceramic vessels were found under the mud deposit, as well as a rectangular block of limestone. Many archaeological evidences prove that this is part of the foundations of Tabuzi ris Magna Temple, which is submerged under water.
According to scientific sources, at least 23 earthquakes struck the Egyptian coast between 320 AD. and 1303 AD, leading to the collapse of part of the Tabuzi Temple and drowning it under the waves.
