Like any great artist committed to their craft, Galliano, Jacobs and McQueen initially struggled to earn enough money to sustain their productivity.
Fashion, despite its glamor and grandeur, has a dark background. The historic feuds between haute couture houses make for an industry rife with controversy, as well as prime material for an eminently watchable documentary series.
That’s exactly what the ‘Kingdom of Dreams’ series offers, uncovering some of the most famous fashion controversies of the past three decades.
The series features will be familiar to those who watched producers Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui’s previous work, the BAFTA-nominated ‘McQueen’, with the same ominous soundtrack and dark opening sequence. Based on the book by journalist and author, Dana Thomas, this time their subject matter is much broader, as they deal with the defining moments of the 90s and 00s.
The series explores how John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Marc Jacobs and Tom Ford supported a multi-billion dollar industry, as well as their relationship with their paymasters, Bernard Arnault and François Pinault.
Hailing from south-east London, John Galliano was hired by Arnault as Givenchy’s creative director. He later replaced Galliano with Alexander McQueen, another bonafide CSM graduate from London’s East End, placing Galliano at Dior. The British sons of a plumber and a taxi driver, respectively, would change the world of fashion forever.
Like any great artist committed to his craft, Galliano, Jacobs and McQueen initially struggled to earn enough money to sustain their productivity. The late editor of American Vogue, André Leon Talley, is credited with helping Galliano get back on his feet.
Galliano’s vision was romantic, while McQueen’s was a twisted fantasy. Facing each other, they were the absolute professional rivals of the time. There was also an American-British rivalry between Galliano, McQueen and Jacobs and Ford.
‘Kingdom of Dreams’ is available to watch on Now TV and Sky.
