This is an album – a collective work of four journalists
One hundred and twenty photos of Thessalonikiin which unknown aspects and moments of the city’s daily life are depicted, by the “Eyewitnesses”, four renowned journalists, includes the new bilingual (Greek-English) book-album released by the Malliaris-Paideia Organization, entitled “Thessaloniki in images’ and subtitled ‘120 frames through the lens of four journalists’.
It is a collective work of journalists Babis Giannakidis, Lazarou Theodorakidis, Christos Karagiannopoulos and Yiannis Kessopoulos.
All the photos are accompanied by short texts written exclusively for each frame by important figures of public life. The edition is completed with a short historical note and a chronological table from the Foundation of Thessaloniki in 315 BC. until 2006, by the late Apostolos Vakalopoulos and updated from 2007 until today, by the editorial team of the publishing organization.
Eighty-four of the photographs, included in the album, were exhibited in the group photo exhibition with the general title “Eyewitnesses”, at the Chalkos Gallery in Thessaloniki.
“Our publishing organization, having a long tradition and experience in publishing historical books, proceeded to publish this bilingual album of four notable journalists, offering yet another important work in the literature of Thessaloniki”, emphasizes the publisher Antonis Malliaris, in his introductory note.
“This album is a testimony to the city. It bears witness to “the thousand faces” of Thessaloniki, constituting a presumption for the historian of the future and at the same time awakens in every reader the desire to discover Thessaloniki again and again”, states the Regional Governor of Central Macedonia, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, in the preface to the album.
“The photographs of the four journalists, most of which were exhibited for the first time in January 2021 at the Chalkos Gallery, largely capture a special look at Thessaloniki. The peculiarity consists in the fact that the gaze is not that of the pretentious photographer or the artist, but that of the simple walker, resident or visitor. It is the look of the everyday person, who goes out for a walk in his city or to do his business and “frames” anything that impresses him. It is the gaze of the traveler – an ephemeral visitor who is trying to collect memories for a lifetime from Thessaloniki”, underlines the mayor of Thessaloniki Konstantinos Zervas in his own foreword.
Thomas Korovinis- Author, Kostas Bliatkas- Journalist/Writer, Chrysoula Paliadeli- Emeritus Professor of Archeology AUTH, Heraklis Papaioannou- Curator MOMus-Museum of Photography of Thessaloniki also give forewords.
It is noted that 30% of the revenue from the sale of the album will be allocated in the form of sponsorship to the social grocery store of the municipality of Thessaloniki.
