“I am representing my daughter, the artist Dua Lipa, and I am willing to discuss with the High Commission the plans for artist appearances for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.”
Shortly before the start of the World Cup, many rumors circulated on the internet that they wanted the well-known singer Dua Lipa to sing at the event, but she denied this by saying:
“At the moment there is a lot of speculation that I will appear at the opening ceremony of the world cup in Qatar. I will not appear, nor have I ever been involved in any negotiation to appear.”
Although she denied the news, leaked emails showed her father’s conversations with World Cup officials, to whom he offered to help organize the opening ceremony and put them in touch with his daughter.
The original email he sent read: “I am representing my daughter, the artist Dua Lipa, and am willing to discuss with the High Commission the plans for artist appearances for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.”
A few months later wanting to contact them again he wrote “I just wanted to follow up on my previous email and was wondering if it would be possible to discuss any opportunity that arises where we can help?
We recently broadcast a live performance of tracks from Dua’s new album as well as performances by other artists, which had 5 million viewers and was the biggest ever worldwide for a live-stream event.”
He revealed that Dua had nothing to do with the emails and even “had no idea” about his plan.
According to the Daily Mail, he said in a statement that, “In 2020 I had several email exchanges with the Qatar World Cup marketing team in my capacity as a festival organizer.
Dua was not involved in or aware of these exchanges or any other conversations. When I introduced myself, I gave them my full background, which included representing Dua.
But I made it clear that I wasn’t talking to them with her in mind, and made that clear when they asked if my questions were about Dua.
This happened in early 2021, at a time when Qatar had made several promises (since winning the World Cup contract) to reform its labor laws and repair its human rights record. As the conversation progressed and the World Cup approached, it became clear that these promises were not going to be kept, so I stopped talking to them.
I have since been approached by a number of people associated with the Qatar World Cup to whom I made it clear that Dua would not be involved with them.”
