The long journey of the Belgian artistic collective TimeCircus which he has traveled on foot in nine months 3,000 kilometers and after passing through Timisoara and the Hungarian Vesprem – the other two European Capitals of Culture in 2023 – it is now approaching Elefsina. That is, it ends the largest pilgrimage procession in the 3,500-year history of Elefsina and joins the other institutions and artists, Greek and international, in the city, for the start of the 2023 Elefsina Cultural Capital of Europe, which calendar-wise begins on January 1. However, the official opening ceremony of the institution will take place spectacularly on February 4, on the coastal front of Elefsina with “Mysterio_0 Mysteries of Transition”, conceived/conceived by the artistic director of Michael Marmarinou and directed by the distinguished British director Chris Baldwin.

Art unites!Michael Marmarinos said at the international press conference, presenting the program today. “So that we here now, are ready to celebrate – for good – an honest abolition of limits, borders, of all kinds. Art unites! The representation – even for a while – of an ideal, ideal world, within a context of joy, creativity, participation, sharing and generosity”.

Michael Marmarinos did not forget anything, even dedicating “a persistent ‘thank you’ to Melina Merkouris and Jack Lang, for the power they had to make such a vision a European Act – to enact the Dreams”. He also thanked “all those who, since then, until this moment, ceaselessly, raise their hands and by supporting, supporting, trying and encouraging, creating, overcoming the countless difficulties of the last moment, realize the common dream. But also all those from the countless series, who perhaps did not make it to the end, as well as those who could not be with us, by our side, at this last moment”.

The program of the 2023 Elefsina Cultural Capital

The Mysteries of Transition, 130 in all, draw inspiration from Eleusis, its history, as well as the contemporary challenges that govern it. It is a rich and innovative artistic, research and educational program, which will be developed throughout 2023. A total of 465 productions will be presented, in 30 different spaces of the city, indoor and outdoor, outdoor and public. Among them the Old Town Hall, the former refreshment bar on the beach front, the former IRIS paint factory, the old railway station, the warehouses of the old olive mill, the Olive Mill, the parking lot, as well as the area behind the Theater of the Old Olive Mill, EKEDA -The Labor Center of Elefsina of Western Attica and the Cultural Center L. Kanellopoulos, the TITAN factory, the archaeological site of Elefsina, the Clock, outdoor spaces such as the Oasis-Former Camping, as well as schools and stadiums.

Its program develops in three central thematic axes: ‘Man/Society, Environment, Work’, with the ambition to leave a sustainable legacy in the city, material and immaterial beyond the boundaries of the year of the title.
