Two hundred historically awe-inspiring glassware showcase Venini Murano and designers Tapio Wirkkala and Toni Zuccheri in a double exhibition in Venice. The two exhibitions are hosted at Le Stanze del Vetro on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in the lagoon and trace the footsteps of the Finnish and Italian designer, especially during the most transformative period of the Venini oven, in the second half of the 1960s.
The first exhibition, entitled “Tapio Wirkkala at Venini” presents the work of the famous Finnish designer, who after his debut at the Venice Biennale in 1966 won great admiration for his elegant works. His rich Scandinavian experience in glassmaking allowed the artist to combine his own culture with typical murano craftsmanship.
The second, “Toni Zuccheri at Venini”, follows the evolution of Zuccheri’s experiments with the material and the process of shaping glass. As an architecture student, he was invited to Venini glassmaking to create a “book of allegorical myths with animal habits” in glass, which was presented at the 1964 Venice Biennale. This was accompanied by a series of jars in which he explored the possibilities of transparency. The two years 1967-68 were followed by new works in opaque glass, inspired by vegetables and in the 1970s unpredictable variations. At the same time, he created a stained glass window for – and with – the architect Gio Ponti in the 1960s.
A video screening room with two documentaries dedicated to the two exhibitions – concluding on March 13, 2022 – welcomes visitors to Le Stanze del Vetro: Marta Pasqualini’s “Toni Zuccheri Pezzi Sparsi” and “Tapio Wirkkala, the man who designed Finland”. Catalogs of the two exhibitions from the renowned art publishing house Skira are also available.
