Famous Iranian actress and women’s rights activist Taraneh Alidoosti, 38, has been arrested in Iran in connection with the protest movement which has entered its fourth month, court sources said on Saturday.

Alidoosti was arrested “by order of the judicial authority” after “failing to provide documentation for some of her allegations” about the protests, Mizan Online, the judiciary’s information agency, said.

The website added that “some figures and several celebrities”, including Alidoosti, were questioned or arrested after making “unsubstantiated comments about recent events and the publication of provocative material in support of street riots”.

Known for having acted in several films by filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, Alidoosti had expressed support, through Instagram, for the demonstrations triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman of Kurdish origin, on September 16, after being arrested in Tehran by the morality police.

The young woman was arrested for violating the strict dress code that the regime imposes on women, including wearing the Islamic headscarf in public. “Taraneh Alidoosti was arrested for her recent actions, publishing false information and content, and for inciting chaos,” local news agency Tasnim announced shortly before, without detailing the place of detention.

On December 8, the actress had denounced the execution of Mohsen Shekari on the gallows after he had been accused of “war against God”. “Any international organization watching this bloodbath without reacting represents an embarrassment to humanity,” she wrote on her Instagram profile.

In November, Alidoosti vowed to stay in his country and “pay the price” necessary to defend his rights and stop working to support the families of those killed or arrested during the demonstrations.

Taraneh Alidoosti is especially known for her work in Asghar Farhadi’s feature film “The Apartment”, which won the Academy Award for Best Non-English Language Film in 2017.

A well-known face in Iranian cinema since she was a teenager, she also acted in Saeed Roustayi’s work “Leila and Her Brothers”, presented this year at the Cannes Film Festival.

Since mid-September, thousands of Iranians and about 40 foreigners have been arrested and more than 2,000 people have been charged in connection with the demonstrations, according to judicial authorities. So far, two men have been executed for participating in the protests.
