“We are giving a solution to a chronic problem that was perpetuated in relation to the Zakynthos Shipwreck,” said Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias from the floor of Parliament, during the plenary debate of the Ministry of Tourism bill.
As Mr. Kikilias pointed out, the Shipwreck of Zakynthos is the second most photographed destination in Greece, but its beach remains closed and the people of Zakynthos can not take advantage of such an important attraction of their island, while he added that it is the duty of the organized State to to ensure access to the wreck area based on the safety of residents and visitors and to make the wreck a sustainable tourist product and in fact of very high quality.
“We carefully studied at the Ministry of Tourism, with my colleagues, the Deputy Minister, the Secretary General and the officials what can be done immediately so that we can open it by the summer. Today we bring an order exclusively for the immediate and urgent needs of the second most photographed destination in Greece. Recently, due to the bad weather, a part of the Shipwreck of Zakynthos left. Our fellow citizens and travelers are in danger, during the last seven years, unfortunately, we have also mourned human lives. “The issue is now supra-local because locally, regardless of the party origin of everyone, it has not been possible to resolve the issue all these years”, underlined the Minister of Tourism.
The relevant legislation provides for the establishment of a five-member Committee, with one member from the Ministry of Tourism, one from the Ionian Islands Region, one from the Municipality of Zakynthos, one of the existing local hotel associations, one from the Professional Chamber of Zakynthos and the Real Estate the assent of the Ministry of Environment.
“This Commission will carry out all kinds of studies and projects exclusively for the Shipwreck, so that it can be supported, guarded, put first of all in such a security framework so that tourists, visitors and locals can visit it.” Mr. Kikilias pointed out, emphasizing that the Commission will go beyond the bureaucracy and will act as a contracting authority for each project, while receiving all the necessary provisions for the observance of legality and the protection of the environment.
“We are here to provide solutions, not to perpetuate problems. “I call on you to go beyond micropolitics and vote on the Government’s bill for Greek Tourism,” he concluded in his speech.
