In the historic district of Plaka with Dimitris Skarmoutsos
Plaka, the most picturesque neighborhood of Athens, is visited by Dimitris Skarmoutsos on Sunday 15 January at 17.45, on SKAI.
A trip to the Athens of another era with many interesting culinary – and not only – stops begins in this show, starting with Saita, an old family tavern with traditional Greek cuisine located in Plaka, since 1970. Honest food and traditional recipes that retain their authenticity, in a setting that exudes the air of another era.
Next stop, Nova Gea, for smoothies and cold-pressed juices, full of flavor and vitamins from seasonal and fresh fruits. Nothing goes to waste in this shop. Impressive is the utilization of even the pulp from the juices which is used for compost while we can even request it as fertilizer for our plants.
At “Aneton”, Dimitris Skarmoutsos enjoys the famous fried potatoes with an egg while our conversation with the owners takes us on a journey through the history of the restaurant that started in Marousi before moving to Plaka.
Last stop of the tour at the historic Vrettos, an old distillery that has become one of the most famous and photographed shops in Athens. Where once they sold various liqueurs of all tastes, it is now a tasteful bar with an impressive decoration and an equally impressive wine cellar. A visit to its basement is the biggest surprise since it used to house “Ta Bakaliarakia” a historic tavern in its place now a very updated grocery store.
Dimitris Skarmoutsou’s return to the studio brings two delicious recipes: fava beans with beetroot and seafood and frittata with prosciutto, potato, spinach and mozzarella.
See you next week in another neighborhood!
