The action film will premiere on May 26 “Kandahar” of Open Road Films, starring Gerard Butleraccording to “Deadline.”
Written by Rick Roman Vaughn and Mitchell LaFortune, it follows Tom Harris, an undercover CIA agent working in the Middle East. An information leak dangerously exposes his hidden identity and secret mission. Together with his Afghani translator they must fight their way out of the desert to a mining site in Kandahar and escape the elite special forces who are chasing them.
It stars Navid Negaban, Ali Fazal and Travis Fimmel, among others, and is directed by Rick Roman Vo. Filming took place in Saudi Arabia and is the first major American production to be filmed in that region.
It’s Butler’s second film opening in theaters in 2023. Lionsgate’s “Plane,” in which the actor plays a pilot who makes an emergency landing in hostile territory, is in its second week in the U.S. and has so far collected $20.7 million.
