Upon accepting the invitation made by the Ministry of Health to be an ambassador for the new vaccination campaign in Brazil, presenter Xuxa Meneghel, 59, has already begun to deal with criticism. The toughest of them was made by Senator Ciro Nogueira (PP-PI), a former minister in the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL). On social networks, he shared an image of her with Zé Gotinha and wrote: “A government turned to the past calls idols from the past. Coherent”.
With that, several celebrities came out in defense of Xuxa, among them the journalist Chico Pinheiro. “Who did you want the idol to be? Brilliant Ustra?”, he asked when referring to the former army colonel.
“You prefer torture and dictatorship, ‘new’ and healthy things for children, right? Shame on you”, replied singer Zélia Duncan, who also classified the comment as “dumb” and “evil”. The comedian Paulinho Serra also responded and called the senator an “asshole”.
In addition to Xuxa and Janja, ministers NÃsia Trindade (Health), Cida Gonçalves (Women) and Daniela Carneiro (Tourism) also participated in a meeting. The group and other advisers discussed the importance of resuming the vaccination campaign in the country after numbers showed declines in recent years.
According to data from the Ministry of Health itself, the population’s vaccination coverage reached in 2021 with less than 59% of citizens immunized. In 2020, the index was 67% and in 2019, 73%. The campaign starts on February 27th.
