BBB 23: Braids, dreads, laces… What makes the minds of black people in this edition of the reality show

by

With one of the blackest editions in its history, Big Brother Brasil (Globo) has served diversity of bodies and styles among its black participants. One of the highlights is the hair of the brothers and sisters, which have already gone from being a reason for fights to being the subject of tweets asking for tips.

On the female side, there are sisters with different braids, natural hair and even fights for lace, while on the male side there are bald heads, short hair and dreadlocks. The report talked to hairdressers and hairdressers to find out about their hairstyles and how to take care of them. Check it out below.

LACES

Participants’ hair was the subject of two discussions in the first Game of Discord, shown on January 23. Cezar Black, 34, gave Tina, 29, a bomb because she refused to lend him her hair. “My love, I didn’t even lend it to Aline! I don’t lend my hair. Besides being expensive, they are my personal things”, she replied.

CEO of specialized store Lady Laces, Lady de Britto Barbosa, 42, says that hair is a luxury item, often compared to jewelry.

“The lace is a realistic wig that simulates the scalp. The threads are injected into a material that looks like a micro skin, which gives the viewer the impression that the threads are coming out of the head”, explains.

According to her, a lace costs from R$ 2,000 to R$ 30,000, depending on the type of hair and the length of the strands. Curly hair, natural blondes and reds tend to be the most expensive.

She jokes that, for her clients, “husband and lace don’t lend themselves”. “It is very personal and there is damage that can happen. The cap takes the shape of the head, so you can lend it to someone else and enlarge the piece. It can also tear the tulle or tangle thread in a wash”, he warns, giving reason to the BBB.

Tina entered the program with a braid and has not yet used the hair that earned her a bomb. Last Friday (27), the sister unbraided her hair with the help of Aline Wirley, 41, Fred Nicácio, 35, Marvvila, 23, and Sarah Aline, 25. The moment was shared on social networks as a portrait of affection between black people.

DREADS

Still during that same Game of Discord, Gabriel Tavares, 24, already eliminated, gave a bomb to Fred Nicácio. While making his justification, the model called the dreads braids, but was soon scolded: “Braid no, love, it’s dread! Dread! Dread! Braids are what Marvvila has”, corrected Fred.

Trancista, Lu Safro, 41 explains that dreads are wefts formed by intertwining hair strands in an organic way, unlike braids, which have a pattern. Although there are different techniques, only natural hair or synthetic threads can be used, for example, it is common to use crochet needles to create the shape.

“The dread is linked to a history of resistance by the black population, it was used as a way of recovering identity”, he explains. For her, in addition to identifying with the public, the brother’s hairstyle can help to break down prejudices, such as that those who wear the hairstyle do not clean their hair.

“They ask, ‘Does this hair wash?’ Yes! You shampoo your scalp, massage it with your fingertips, and then squeeze the hair extension to wash the length.” According to the hairdresser, the hydration of the wires can also be done. To avoid accumulation of waste, just rinse well.

BRIDALS

Braids have been in the minds of black women for a long time, but their appreciation and diversity has grown in recent years. In addition to Tina, Sarah and Marvvila entered reality with braided hair, but with very different styles.

Sarah has been walking the runway with her gypsy braids, as the style that is currently in vogue is called. In it, thin braids are interspersed with locks of hair, which can be smoother, wavy or curly. The hairstyle is also called a gypsy braid or bohemian braids.

Marvvila debuted with the program with box braids, whose technique consists of dividing the hair into squares to braid it to the ends. In her case, the chosen shape was triangular.

On Twitter, netizens asked what was the secret for the singer’s hair to be impeccable for so long, without frizz or loose strands, and Rika Ferrera, 36, her braid artist, joked that she used too much glue.

Despite the joke, in an interview with F5, she says the clue isn’t in the product (which isn’t really glue) but in the technique. She uses gel glue to give grip on the wires and reduce loose ends. Afterwards, she braids using the synthetic thread to hide her natural hair.

She revealed how the choice of braid was planned. Working with her sister for five years, Rika usually suggests new things to Marvvila. Upon learning about the BBB, the trancista went after a hairstyle different from what the public had seen in previous editions.

“The girls usually come in with long braids, so I said: ‘Let’s do a different bob, with accessories in different colors —silver and gold—, to draw attention and make it clear that the short can also be the protagonist of the Afro world” , he spoke.

She also considered the endurance tests. If you made thin braids, the hair would weigh more due to the greater amount of strands used in the hairstyle. For the chosen one, a smaller amount of synthetic yarn was used due to the thickness and length of the braids.

For Rika, who is also black, Marvvila’s entry into reality is a personal achievement. “For me, it would be a dream to have a braid artist on the show doing several hairstyles, showing the versatility of the braid. When she told me she was going and that my work would be on the small screen being seen by the world, I was very happy”, he says.

His expectation was to show the public how braids can be used to enhance black beauty and promote self-esteem. “But as a choice and not as the only option”, she warns. “They think that the black public uses braids because there is only one hairstyle, when in fact it is one of the choices that black women have to change their hair, do hairstyles and have versatility.”

NATURAL

Another sister who has taken advantage of the versatility of her hair is Aline Wirley. The artist has been betting on hairstyles such as built-in braids, loose hair, use of turbans and scarves, with and without clips…

“People with this type of hair can create several hairstyles. This is very cool and has to reach as many people as possible, because then they will have the courage to assume their hair”, says Luciana Lourenço Barbosa, 43, specialist in curly hair .

Like any curly hair, whose main characteristic is to retain less oiliness, this type does not usually create much definition. “But being frizzy is not synonymous with dry hair. What makes it dry and damaged is the way you handle the products, thinking you need to wet them too much. If you moisturize, it becomes soft”, explains the hairdresser.

“I say that this hair is the crown of the black woman, because it really is fantastic hair”, she says. According to Luciana, professionals used to say that it was necessary to cut it short, close to the head, which contributed to prejudice. “They found out that it’s a hair that you can make bangs, you can cut a bob, and you can make hairstyles, because it stays put”, she says, using hers as an example.

Domitila Barros, 38, and Paula Freitas, 28, have longer hair and abuse curls. For Luciana, Domitila opened her curls. “What I noticed as a professional is that it loosens the curls. Instead of leaving it well defined, it’s kind of wavy.” If that’s the case, it’s important to reinforce hydration so as not to harm the wires.

Paula has curly hair, a little more defined than the other participants. “She is part of this miscegenation in Brazil, which from the mixture of black and white creates this curly hair”, she explains.

For the hairdresser, the diversity of the program serves as an example for society. “They are taking our reality to television. They are showing the daily life of the black woman, who is a versatile woman — she wears braids, takes off and puts on a lace, wears a natural black. a straight hair pattern to be accepted, and they are taking it to the BBB”, celebrates.
