Dior suspends partnership with Travis Scott after Astroworld tragedy

by

French brand Dior announced this Tuesday (28) that it has suspended indefinitely its collaboration with Cactus Jack, brand of rapper Travis Scott, 30, due to the tragedy that left ten dead at the Astroworld music festival in Houston, Texas (USA) in November.

“Out of respect for all those affected by the tragic events at Astroworld, Dior has decided to indefinitely postpone the launch of Cactus Jack collaboration products originally intended to be included in its 2022 summer collection,” the company said in a statement.

Scott’s partnership with creative director Kim Jones was first announced in June — followed by a fashion show in Paris that featured pieces paying homage to rapper Pop Smoke, coveted sneakers and more — marking the first time Dior has worked with a musician. The collection was scheduled to be sold a year after its release.

The indefinite suspension is the latest in a series of postponements for Scott. Cactus Jack had associated with brands such as Nike and McDonald’s, but many have distanced themselves from the rapper since the festival’s tragedy.

According to Page Six, since the tragedy, Astroworld has been hit by more than 140 lawsuits and a massive lawsuit by the show’s 1,500 attendees against Scott, Live Nation, Apple Music, special guest Drake and others.

The cover of Scott’s W Magazine featuring pregnant girlfriend Kylie Jenner was also removed, and Nike also delayed the release of new shoe styles designed by the artist.

The rapper claimed in an interview with Charlamagne tha God at “The Breakfast Club” earlier this month that he “didn’t hear” the screams of thousands of fans and did everything he could to avert the tragedy. He added that he intends to find out exactly what went wrong.

“I’m going to fix this for the people of the future. I’m going to fix this problem and find a solution to make sure it doesn’t happen in the future and definitely be the number one voice for it.”

UNDERSTAND THE CASE

The tragedy happened during a concert by rapper Travis Scott on the stage of Astroworld, in Houston, Texas (USA), on November 5th. In all, 10 people died and several were hospitalized in the riot during the performance.

Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner spoke about the tragedy at their brother-in-law’s concert. “Absolutely heartbroken for the lives that were lost and for anyone who was injured in Astroworld. Like all of you, our family is in shock from the tragedy. We are praying for all the victims,” Kim said.

Kendall said he is still speechless on the news. “I am really sorry for the families who have lost loved ones and my prayers go out to everyone involved. I am sending out all my love to all who have been affected and wishing them strength during this incredibly devastating and sensitive time,” he commented.

According to TMZ, Scott has not left his home since the tragedy. His lawyer Ed McPherson spoke of how devastated he was because it happened in his hometown and he locked himself in his house. “The fact that it happened to Houston, who he loves, and that there are so many people around, is particularly devastating.”

Travis has canceled his 14-15 Vegas show and a petition is growing online to interrupt his main event at Coachella next spring. The lawyer says that introducing himself is the last thing on Travis’s mind at the moment and supporting the victims’ families.

Sources linked to the rapper told TMZ that he was never informed at the festival about the dead and injured people. According to sources, Travis did not know the gravity of the situation when he arrived at the after-show party and this remains consistent with the fact that no one, including the police, has publicly confirmed the seriousness of the events that took place there.

Drake, who threw the party and performed with Travis as a surprise guest on the show, also had no idea there were people dying in the crowd. According to TMZ, there were several people begging camera operators and others to stop the show.

Although Travis was at least 50 meters from the camera operator, sources said he did not hear calls to end the show because fans were dying. But when he learned of the tragedy he immediately left the party.

According to law enforcement authorities, the episode was triggered after fans started pushing each other towards the stage. After about 30 minutes, confusion escalated and what Houston Police Chief Executive Larry Satterwhite called a “mass incident” ensued.

“All of a sudden, we had a bunch of people on the floor going through some kind of medical episode,” he said. “It happened all at once, in a matter of minutes.”

The fire department took 25 people to hospitals in the region, 11 of which had cardiac arrest. Local police chief Troy Finner said one of the lines that will be investigated is that one person in the audience could be drugging others with a syringe.

According to him, a security guard felt a sting in the neck while trying to contain a disturbance and fell unconscious. Doctors, who revived him using an opioid antagonist drug, noticed a mark, similar to what a syringe would leave, on the agent’s neck.

Others in the crowd would also have passed out unconsciously during the performance.

After the tragedy, Travis said he would bear the funeral costs of the victims who died in his show. He will also team up with a company to provide mental health services to those in need.
