“I will remember you with love, respect and appreciation”: Marlon Brando’s kind letter of separation to his mistress

The absolute charmer of the cinema, Marlon Brando, in addition to being a star, seems to have been kind to the ladies, even when he wanted to divorce her.

A break-up letter sent by Brando in the late 1940s to the French actress Solance Pontel proves his character’s callousness towards his mistress’s feelings.

In the three-page handwritten letter, the star says he is writing it “sincerely” and that he “doesn’t want to humiliate you”.

“I regret that I couldn’t try harder to be less enjoyable and a little more compliant because of my erratic, aggressive and temperamental nature,” he says at one point.

My intention was impeccably meticulous, but my emotions, unfortunately, were fickle. However, I will remember you with love, respect and appreciation. When we meet in France (maybe in October), I think my behavior will be a bit more mature.”

He then signs “warmly, Marlon” and the additional footnote: “Please give my kind thanks to your mother, if she will accept them.”

This rare Brando letter – albeit completely misspelled – was auctioned by RR Auctions and sold to an unknown bidder for $8,000.
