This is the song list for King Charles’ coronation: The Beatles ‘in’, Elton John ‘out’

Of the 27 artists and bands on the list, only three are not British

Ahead of his coronation King Charles III on 6 May, the UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) posted a playlist on Spotify.

The setlist for the coronation includes 27 songs, including Queen’s triumphant anthem ‘We Are the Champions’, Michael Bublé’s uplifting hit ‘It’s a Beautiful Day’ and Grammy winner Harry Styles’ ‘Treat People with Kindness’.

Of the 27 artists and bands on the list, only three are not British: Boney M., Canada’s Bublé and Jamaica’s Grace Jones.

Also notable is the absence of British singer Elton John, who was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and a close friend of Diana of Wales. The performance of ‘Candle in the Wind’ at the princess’s funeral was one of the most moving moments of the ceremony.

The playlist originally included 28 songs, but a track by rapper Dizzee Rascal, who was convicted last year of assaulting his ex-partner, quickly “disappeared”.

“A track featuring Dizzee Rascal was included by mistake and once this was identified it was removed,” a DCMS spokesperson told BBC News.

According to the spokesman, the songs were chosen to honor British and Commonwealth artists ahead of the upcoming coronation. However, it is interesting that of the 56 member states that make up the Commonwealth, there are artists from only three!

The nearly two-hour long playlist was released on the new website for King Charles’ coronation, which launched on February 6. There is nothing coincidental about this date: on the same day in 1952, Elizabeth was proclaimed queen after her father’s death. The website includes detailed information about the coronation, how to participate and the activities on offer.
