Steven Spielberg is lining up his next big project, he will adapt one of Stanley Kubrick’s non-series films into a seven-part series for HBO.

During a press conference at the 73rd Berlin Film Festival, Steven Spielberg confirmed that he would be moving forward with the project. “With the collaboration of Christian Kubrick (Kubrick’s wife) and Jan Harlan (producer of Kubrick’s films) we are preparing a major production for HBO based on Stanley Kubrick’s original screenplay, ‘Napoleon,'” said the director.

Stanley Kubrick originally had plans to make the film after the success of “2001: A Space Odyssey.” He did extensive research on the leader of the French Revolution and even planned to shoot across Europe, France, the UK and Romania. The film project was also to include around 40,000 soldiers and even star David Hemmings and Jack Nicholson. Audrey Hepburn was cast as his wife, Josephine.

Unfortunately, due to the cost of filming Sergei Bondarchuk’s film adaptation of “War and Peace” and the commercial failure of “Waterloo”, Kubrick abandoned plans for a Napoleonic film and focused on the film “Barry Lyndon”.
