HBO Max has greenlit the prequel series of Stephen King’s iconic IT horror novel.

Entitled ‘Welcome to Derry’, the series promises to expand the universe created in the successful big screen adaptations of IT and IT Chapter Two, directed by Andy Muschietti.

Muschietti will take the helm of several episodes of the upcoming series, including the first. Jason Fuchs, who co-wrote IT Chapter Two with Muschietti, will join Muschietti for Welcome to Derry and write the first episode based on a story by Muschietti and himself.

Although plot details are scarce, the series will be a prequel to the movies, exploring the haunted Maine town before the events of the books and movies. King, who has given his stamp of approval, said: “I’m thrilled that the story of Derry, Maine’s most haunted town, continues and I’m delighted that Andy Muschietti will be overseeing the spooky festivities, along with a brain trust featuring his talented sister, Barbara.”

Fans are also wondering if Bill Skarsgård will return as Pennywise, the iconic villain he so masterfully embodied in the movies. HBO Max has yet to make any casting announcements for the series.
