Grammy-nominated English singer-songwriter Florence Wells of Florence & the Machine is writing a new musical based on Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby. The show, titled “Gatsby: A New Musical,” is based on Fitzgerald’s classic play, in which aspiring writer Nick Carraway befriends the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby. The two attend a party at Gatsby’s mansion and reflect on the existence of the American dream.

The acclaimed singer-songwriter is behind the musical’s music and lyrics and will work with Grammy Award nominee Thomas Bartlett, producer of Florence & The Machine’s ‘Jenny of Oldstones’.

“This book has haunted me for a large part of my life,” Florence Wells said in a statement in 2021 when she announced the project. “It has some of my favorite lines in literature. Musicals were my first love and I feel a deep connection to Fitzgerald’s broken romance. It’s an honor to be offered the opportunity to recreate this book in song,” he noted.

The show will premiere at a theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2024. Florence Wells in 2013 contributed to the soundtrack of Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
