“The award is for all the women who will win it after me,” said the first female director of photography
The American Society of Cinematographers presented the award for Best Cinematography in a Motion Picture to Maddie Walker for her work in the movie ‘Elvis’.
Australian-born Maddie Walker is the first female cinematographer to win the top prize in the history of the Cinematographers Association of America.
Attendees at the awards ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles last night erupted in applause and cheers as they chanted her name.
“The award is for all the women who win it after me,” said Maddie Walker, who thanked “Elvis” director Baz Luhrmann for allowing her to “create magic with him” and costume designer Kathryn Martin for her “support” and film crew for “dancing with the camera and flying with the camera” during Austin Butler’s performance as Elvis Presley.
Her fellow nominees were Greig Fraser (The Batman), Darius Konji (Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths), Claudio Miranda (Top Gun: Maverick) and Roger Deakins (Empire of Light).
Seven out of the last ten years the winner of the Cinematographers Guild Award has also won the Best Picture Oscar.
Also honored at the 37th Sturla Brandth Grøvlen Best Cinematography in a Limited Edition for ‘War Sailor’ were Sturla Brandth Grøvlen, Best Cinematography in a Limited Series or Pilot and Sean Porter in the Best Cinematography category for a TV Movie or Limited Series or Pilot Episodes for “The Old Man I” (FX) and Ben Bernhardt and Riju Das in the category Best Cinematography in a Documentary for “All That Breathes” (HBO/HBO Max).
Actress and producer Viola Davis received the Association’s Steering Committee Award, and filmmaker Steven Goldblatt received the Overall Contribution Award.
