After all, distance work is a new trend in the market, which was born in the coronavirus pandemic. Given its great benefits, there are plenty of governments that have announced incentives to attract foreign workers, such as digital nomads.

According to a WorkMotion survey, Melbourne is the city with the highest ranking in the relevant index, scoring well in terms of compliance factors in employment, citizen happiness and the visa for digital nomads. Montreal and Sydney are ranked second and third, respectively. Dublin ranks best in terms of ease of employment compliance, followed by Helsinki and Copenhagen. The city with the happiest citizens is Copenhagen, followed by Bern and Wellington.

Istanbul has the most favorable tax rates for long-distance workers, followed by Lisbon and Hong Kong, while Athens ranks 48th and eighth in the overall ranking with a score of 71.23 per 100.

The company began the study by identifying a list of indicators that affect whether a city is a good place to relocate workers, covering compliance regulations for employment, infrastructure, costs and well-being.

He then evaluated thousands of cities worldwide for a number of factors related to distance work, before selecting the 80 cities with the best score.

For the first category concerning compliance with distance employment, it was assessed: how simple it is for companies to hire distance workers under local law, in addition to the legal requirements they must comply with when employing a distance worker.

In these two subcategories, Athens comes 62nd and 60th, respectively. It was also determined whether the sites in the study offered a specific visa for remote workers, where it is stated that the relevant legislation has already been announced in Greece.

At the same time, the researchers analyzed the cost in each city by studying a) the local tax rates, b) the cost of housing and c) the availability of housing, and d) how affordable the city is for food, energy and other living expenses.

Athens is ranked 59th, 24th, 28th and 20th. At the same time, the urban infrastructure of each city was evaluated by analyzing the levels of political stability (68th Athens), gender equality (70th), minority equality (70th), LGBT + equality (69th). The level of security of cities was also assessed (42nd Athens), in addition to the quality of the public education system (76th place), the health system and citizens’ access to health care (62nd place Athens).
