The Elbphilharmonie of Hamburg will send a message of joy and movement this year with a synchronized performance of bright drones which will illuminate the facade of the concert hall designed by the office of Herzog & de Meuron.

The installation of Studio DRIFT has been prepared for the fifth anniversary of the room, which was completed in January 2017 after nine and a half years of work.

“Art must be accessible to as many as possible. That is why we designed our installation for the public space. “When we started working with Elbphilharmonie, we immediately agreed that we should bring what is happening inside, where people can see it,” said Ralph Nauta, who co-founded the Dutch studio with Lonneke Gordijn in 2007.

The artists performed the light performance to bring the Elbphilharmonie Hambourg to life in a playful way. At the Breaking Waves facility, the synchronized drone explores the movement of water surrounding the concert hall and wraps around the west, south and north facades so that people can see the spectacle from the harbor area.

The light sculpture is also associated with movement and music in the hall: the performance is a choreography of the second part of the Thomas Adès Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, which is played at the anniversary concert in the Great Hall. On the night of April 28, 2022, the performance “Waves that break” will last about seven minutes.
