Almost 16 years ago, Denzel Washington and Ridley Scott wowed audiences with the hit crime drama American Gangster, and now it looks like the two are set to reunite.

Sources cited by Deadline say Washington is in final negotiations to co-star in Scott’s Gladiator sequel, starring Paul Mescal.

Scott will also serve as a producer on the film, which was written by David Scarpa.

However, Washington, according to the same sources, did not immediately say yes to his participation in the film. But after reading the script and meeting with the director he decided to give in.

Mezcal in the new film will play Lucio, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) as Crowe’s Maximus, as a character completed at the end of the original film Maximus saved Lucio and Lucilla by avenging his family, impressing the young boy.

The role that Washington will play in the new version of “Gladiator” has not yet been announced.
