The state of Texas is looking to introduce new tax breaks for film and television producers thanks, in part, to the success of Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” series.

The western drama series starring Kevin Costner was filmed in the small town of Vinas, Texas, giving a vital boost to the local economy.

However, many TV shows and movies set in Texas are not actually filmed there because surrounding states offer more attractive tax incentives to producers.

In 2022, the entertainment industry pumped $1.5 billion into the economies of New Mexico, Louisiana and Oklahoma, according to THR, much of which was spent on series or movies set in Texas.

The three states have a similar natural environment to Texas, but with more attractive tax incentives.

If the new bill, filed in the Texas state legislature on March 7, passes, movies and series would be eligible for tax credits of 30 percent to 42.5 percent on in-state spending.

In February, Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick stated that it is “Taylor Sheridan’s goal to move all of his television and film production to Texas.”
