In Nemouta is the mythical oak forest of Foloi – a protected area of the NATURA 2000 network – inside the gorge of the Erymanthos river
A natural oasis with waterfalls that has been left behind in time and fortunately untouched by tourism, is located on the border with Achaia and Arcadia.
Nemouta is a village in the prefecture of Ilia, it presents me with a rare and untapped natural beauty.
Nemouta, almost 42 km from Pyrgos Ilias, is built at an altitude of 560 m. next to the river Erymanthos, a tributary of Alpheios.
The village is famous for its waterfalls, in the river gorge, while their path is easily accessible even for children.
The area has more than 30 waterfalls and in recent years has been an attraction for visitors.
Natura area
A sign gives information about the area: “Path full of willows and plane trees that ends at the borders of the village of Nemouta. The mythical oak forest of Foloi is a protected area of the NATURA 2000 network. It is located at an altitude of 688m. on Mount Foloi Ilia and occupies an area of 33,000 acres. The crossing of the Erymanthos and Ladon rivers creates a unique environment. It is the only native broadleaf oak forest in the Balkans with old stands of oaks. It is considered one of the 196 important areas for birds in Greece by the NATURA 2000 network.
