At a school in Wisconsin, USA, students were banned from singing the song “Rainbowland” at a musical event. The principal of a Wisconsin elementary school banned the first grade from performing its song Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus’ christening, in concert because his lyrics “could be considered controversial” according to school board rules.

The issue gained national media coverage last week when Heyer Elementary teacher Melissa Temple called out the Waukesha County school district on Twitter and added the profiles of Parton and Cyrus.

“My first graders were so excited to sing ‘Rainbowland’ for our spring concert, but it has been vetoed by our management. When will this stop?” wrote and shared photo with lyrics of 2017 song.

According to an AP report, parents in the area claim the song was banned because it “encourages acceptance of the LGBTQ community and references rainbows.”

Instead of “Rainbowland” it was designated that students can perform “Rainbow Connection” by Kermit the Frog from the Muppet Show.

Melissa Tempel and her colleague who teach bilingual students and co-organized the event wanted the theme to be global unity and peace. Among the songs they chose were “It’s a Small World” in Spanish and “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles.

Tempel said that “Rainbowland” is “not just a song,” according to CNN.

“We try to support inclusion,” he emphasized. “The love and acceptance part, and being who you are, I don’t think there’s any politics in that,” he said.
