With great participation and interest, the Athenians “embraced” today’s tour of City Hall of Kotzia Square. In this emblematic building of the city, people of all ages, but especially the young, had the opportunity to admire the interior of the building, its unique aesthetics, as well as the great works of art that adorn it.

The volunteer guides from Open House – Athens 2023, they made extensive reference to the history and architecture of the building, the origin of its design influences, as well as the interventions made over the years.

The visitors toured imposing halls of the City Hall, such as the Fotis Kontoglou Hall, with its unparalleled frescoes, as well as the Old Meeting Hall. The walls of this room are decorated by the great painter of the 30’s generation, George Gounaropoulos, where the history of Athens from antiquity to 1821 is depicted – in a rare technique of oil and wax.

The mayor of Athens Kostas Bakoyannis, referring to the importance of the event and its great symbolism, told APE-MPE: “Athens welcomes this weekend the Open House Athens, one of the most important international institutions for highlighting the many great historical and contemporary architectural treasures her. We are very happy to open the doors of the Athens City Hall again this year for you to take a tour of the wonderful world of Kontoglou and Gounaropoulos, but also as a symbolic move, indicative of our open and direct relationship with the city. Warm thanks to the organizers, to the volunteers, and especially to the hundreds of Athenians who honor us with their visit every year.”

It is noted that the tour of the City Hall will last until 7 pm today, and will continue tomorrow, Sunday, April 2 from 10 am to 2 am after noon. The entrance is free.
