A tragic hero tries to tame his unacknowledged passion for his wife’s young niece. What goes on in his mind, the inner conflict that ignites, the one-way road to his self-destruction and the attitude of the people around him are conveyed in a special way to the viewers of the show “High from the Bridge”, which comes this month in Thessaloniki.

The work of one of the leading American playwrights, Arthur Miller, stands out more, with the special direction of Giorgos Nanouris. “There are no props at all in the show. The actors are “naked” on stage, completely exposed and have nowhere to hide. The performance is based solely on the atmosphere and their performances, while they themselves have to give their 100%, because the audience focuses only on them, as if a close-up of the heroes has been done”, says the director.

This arduous task is carried out by Pygmalion Dadakaridis, who carries the biggest burden, as the tragic protagonist, but also by Ioanna Pappa, who plays his wife, who understands what is happening to him and tries until the last moment to help him get out from his impasse. “The whole show is built around this hero and what’s going on in his mind and soul, which he doesn’t confess to anyone, ever, in the whole play. But gradually, everyone starts to understand it, both the heroes and the viewers. So I wanted to make the viewer go inside the mind of this man and see what is going on in his soul in relation to his young niece, who has unwittingly – perhaps, fallen in love and the struggle he does to resist it.” explains Mr. Nanouris.

He characterizes the work as human, with which anyone can identify, as he will surely see something that will remind him of a situation or touch him personally. “Each one of us can at some point in his life think about something, about a person, that he shouldn’t. After all, I think that Miller also shows that it is human nature to think something about a person that we shouldn’t, but it is also human nature to fight it and not submit to it. This is what the hero does, who does not submit and tries to tame it even if it has disastrous results for him”, says Giorgos Nanouris.

The cast is completed by Dimitris Mavropoulos, Dimitris Kapetanakos, Renos Rotas and Eugenia Xygorou, around whom a vortex is created. Playing on a rotating stage, with coordinated lights and music, the performance resembles a choreography from beginning to end, like a single system from which they cannot escape…

“High above the bridge” premieres at the Aristotelion Theater on April 21, where it will be staged every Friday, Saturday and Sunday for a few weeks.
