The period film chronicles his tumultuous relationship French King Louis XV and his mistress, Madame Jean du Barry. Their relationship caused a great scandal especially when Jean arrived at the Court of Versailles. Louis XV, also known as “the Beloved”, reigned for 59 years, the longest in French history since Louis XIV of France. But he was an unpopular king after being accused of corruption and impiety.

The film marks Depp’s return to acting following his legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard. It is worth noting, according to “Variety”, that the Hollywood actor before the start of filming spoke very little French.
