The participation of the Municipality of Sifnos in the International Tourism Fair “Ferien Messe” was of intense international interest, where the project “METAL PLACES: Crossroads of civilization in the Eastern Mediterranean” was presented.

In the context of the project, the rich, archaeological and metallurgical cultural heritage that flourished millennia ago, in Sifnos, Serifos, Kythnos and the Asgata Community of Cyprus, is revealed for the first time to the general public.

Many friends of walking and cultural-archaeological tourism responded to the “official first” of the Municipality Sifnos and were informed about the sightseeing routes that lead to the ancient silver mines in Agios Sostis and the famous gold mines of Sifnos in the area of Faros. The action “traveled” the audience back millennia, as the metallurgical and mining activity in Sifnos started from the 3rd millennium BC. The ancient quarries of Sifnos are considered to be among the first organized quarries in the world and according to Herodotus, Sifnos was one of the richest economies of mankind in ancient times! As part of the exhibition participation, informational material was distributed about the ancient mining heritage of the islands of Sifnos, Serifos and Kythnos.

The act “METAL PLACES – Crossroads of culture in the Eastern Mediterranean”, was approved and implemented within the framework of the INTERREG VA Cooperation Program Greece – Cyprus 2014-2020 and is co-financed by the European Union (ETPA) and by National resources of Greece and Cyprus.
