Prosecutors in New Mexico dropped criminal charges against the actor Alec Baldwin for the fatal shooting of filmmaker Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie “Rust,” officials confirmed.

Baldwin, 65, was pointing a .45 Colt pistol at the filmmaker during filming on Oct. 21, 2021, when the gun went off, killing her and injuring director Joel Souza.

He was charged in January with two counts of negligent homicide in connection with the death of Halyna Hutchins and the wounding of Souza. The actor was accused of showing “reckless” disregard for safety on the set of the film.

Baldwin stated that the gun went off accidentally. He has repeatedly said he was told by crew members that the gun was not loaded and has also insisted he did not pull the trigger. In February, Baldwin pleaded not guilty to manslaughter and had agreed to court terms to finish shooting the low-budget film, as well as to be prohibited from using weapons and drinking alcohol.

ABC News and CNN reported Thursday that New Mexico prosecutors dropped charges against Baldwin.

Baldwin’s lawyers later said in a statement that they were “satisfied with the decision to dismiss the case.” In February, the Santa Fe district attorney’s office announced it had dropped the weapons charge against Baldwin, which would have carried a five-year prison sentence.

Also on Thursday, April 20, Baldwin and other cast members continued filming the movie in Montana, according to the production company.
