How far do top footballers have to go to stay at the top of the game? How do they gain the edge over their competitors?

THE Cristiano Ronaldo he paints his toenails black for practical reasons, specifically to avoid fungus and bacteria. The Portuguese superstar, now earning £175m a year in Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr, is renowned for his obsession with health and fitness. Painting his toenails isn’t the only unusual method Ronaldo uses to stay in great shape.

Six mini meals during the day

Instead of following the traditional structure of three meals (breakfast-lunch-dinner), Ronaldo prefers to fuel himself with six smaller mini-meals throughout the day: Breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, dinner. However, Ronaldo’s eating pattern is not unusual for athletes. The athlete has a personal nutritionist who has been following him since his Real Madrid days.

He loves nutrient-dense avocados, fresh fish and generally sticks to high-protein, low-fat foods such as chicken, with Ronaldo once calling it “magical” for its health benefits. Salad, whole grains like quinoa, and fresh fruit are also on his plate every day.

Fellow Portuguese players have said that Ronaldo’s favorite dish is Bacalhau a Bras, a traditional dish that combines scrambled eggs, fried potatoes and salted cod. And one thing it doesn’t seem to touch is sugary drinks and sodas.

Sleep is an important chapter

Ronaldo sleeps 7.5 hours, which is what most people should aim for, but he does it in an unusual way: with five 90-minute naps. Known as polyphasic sleep, the basic idea is to break the normal sleep cycle into more sleep phases. This is what babies do to fall asleep, which is usually at the expense of their parents’ sleep schedule.

The purported benefits of this practice include increased productivity, alertness, and the ability to learn and retain new information. Some scientific studies have found that taking a 90-minute nap during the day can improve reaction times for tasks. Other scientists say polyphasic sleep has no proven benefits compared to a regular sleep schedule.

A cryotherapy chamber worth £50,000

When he returned to Manchester United in 2021, Ronaldo reportedly brought home a cryotherapy chamber worth £50,000. Cryotherapy chambers use frozen liquid nitrogen to quickly plunge the air inside them to -200C (-328F). The treatment, which has fans including Usain Bolt and Erling Haaland, is thought to help reduce inflammation and swelling in injuries by boosting blood circulation as the body responds to the extreme cold.

For these reasons, some athletes use it to relieve muscle soreness and enhance recovery times between matches and training sessions.

Ronaldo, a fan of cryotherapy for nearly a decade, takes its safe use seriously. When using the chamber at home, the footballer prefers the cryotherapy session which lasts just three minutes at a relatively cool temperature of -160C (-356F).

He paints his toenails black

In a recent post on social media, fans noticed something unusual. Ronaldo’s toenails were painted black. There’s a good reason why he does this, and it’s for the same reason that many top athletes also paint their nails. Athletes are said to paint their nails or cover them with a protective layer to prevent them from being infected by fungus and bacteria.
