The Municipal Theater of Volos will be dedicated to the great Greek composer Vangelis Papathanasiou, who came from Volos and who passed away last year, and will bear the name by which he became world-famous with his top musical compositions.

The decision to name the brand-new-completely reconstructed Municipal Theater “Vangelis” is expected to be taken tomorrow night, during the municipal council meeting, at the proposal of the mayor of Volos, Achillea Beu, who stated: “With our decision, the name of “Vangelis”, who traveled all over the earth, will “return” to his home”.

The new theater of Volos will be inaugurated by the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, during his visit to the capital of Magnesia, at the end of June.

Vangelis Papathanasiou was – worldwide – one of the leading names in his field, as a musician and composer of electronic, jazz and orchestral music. He influenced the development of different musical genres, while he is considered a pioneer of electronic sound.

He was awarded an Oscar for the music of the film “Roads of Fire” in 1982. He also provided music for a number of other motion pictures, such as Blade Runner, 1492: Christopher Columbus, Alexander, El Greco and many others. He had collaborated with his dear friend Demi Russo, Irini Pappa, Nana Mouschouri and Jon Anderson. In 1997 he directed the opening ceremony of the 6th IAAF World Athletics Championships held at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens. His work “Myth” was selected by NASA as the official music for the 2001 Mars Odyssey mission, while in 2002 he composed the World Cup soundtrack.

Vangelis Papathanasiou was born on March 29, 1943 in Volos, in the region of Agria, and showed his talent very early, having started composing at the age of four, while he gave his first public performance at the age of six, without having no musical training. He was self-taught despite the pressures of his parents, but also of his teachers, who urged him to take music lessons.

He then studied classical music, painting and directing at the Academy of Fine Arts in Athens, lived for many years in Milan and Paris and together with his brother, Nikos, created unsurpassed musical compositions.

The great composer passed away on May 17, 2022 while being treated in a Paris hospital.
