One in three foreign visitors to Crete go to Balo
Balos is a lagoon, which is located on the peninsula of Gramvousa, at the northwestern tip of Crete. It is located between the peninsula of Gramvousa with the massif of Geroskinos and the rocky peninsula of Tigani. It is characterized by shallow waters and white sand, which in places is pink due to crushed shells and corals.
Balos is accessible by ferry, by road and on foot. There is an organized ferry connection with Kasteli Kissamos, with boats that also visit Imeri Gramvousa. The Gramvousa peninsula is crossed lengthwise by a dirt road which starts from Kaliviani Chania and after ten kilometers it reaches a parking area. Then access to the beach is via a downhill path which offers a panoramic view of the lagoon.
The descent takes 10 to 20 minutes. Furthermore, the access from Kalyviani Chania has hiking trails, which pass through Gramvousa or Geroskino. Research, which was carried out by the MAICH and the Polytechnic of Crete for tourism in Crete, showed that one in three foreign visitors to Crete who used Chania airport as an exit gate had visited Balos.
